Handdyed yarn trading

I seem to have gotten rid of most of my object hoarding, shopping compulsions, but what is it about yarn? It is the colors. There are infinite color combinations. You would think-how many combinations of blue yarn does she need? Well apparently everyone that exists.
What is especially interesting to me is the frenzy and trading society of the hand dyed yarns. In order to purchase, you do not even have time to look at the website, but must just purchase as fast as you can. These yarns are so precious, that after they are acquired, most times not even cash can buy them. People will only keep them to then trade with someone else. See Woolmeise, Sundara, Mama Blue, Pigeonroof Studios, Plucky Knitter. These yarns are posted on etsy and within seconds are purchased. The dyers cannot possible dye enough for the demand.

Which makes me think, why don't they get some bank loans and expand. Instead of just the one person dying, selling, and packaging, they could outsource. Explanations have been that they are artist, etc. But if it was me, I would want to share my artistry with as many folks as possible. Yarns like Lornas Laces, Dream in Color, Malabrigo have managed to do these things it seem.
And the the concept of a yarn diet. Which is basically saying, your not going to buy anymore yarn. This is done after you have ASBLE or some such, meaning aquired stash beyond life expectancy. I am amazing at the amount of yarn people have. I think my 80+ skeins is a bit much, but there are folks who have 200, 500, 900.
With that being said, I am anxiously awaiting etsy update from Pigeonroof studios.

  1. Haha! I'd never seen ASBLE. I have two 105 quart plastic bins that are full of my stash. I've been trying to stay away from stores that sell yarn, and that's helped me to control my yarn obsession. I agree fully - it's the colors. I'm passionate about colors and textures... sigh. That being said, I have not yet ventured into online purchasing. Hopefully, I will stay away until I start using what I have at a steadier rate. :) I am going to look up the sellers you mentioned. :)
